Aggies split delayed DH
DURANT, Oklahoma (March 10) – The weather finally cooperated long enough for the Cameron Aggies (13-11, 7-9 LSC) and the Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm (9-11, 8-8 LSC) to finish their four-game weekend series. The series was originally scheduled to begin last Friday, but was pushed back to Sunday and wrapped up this afternoon. An intense snowstorm blanketed Durant late last week, preventing the series from starting on schedule.
CU and SOSU split the four-game series, with CU winning the nightcap both days. On Sunday SOSU won the first game 13-5, but Cameron rebounded to win the second game 12-9. This afternoon SOSU once again won the opener, this time by the score 10-9. CU bounced back and won the finale 6-5.
“We played alright, but good enough to win,” Head Coach Todd Holland said. “Durant (Oklahoma) is a hard place to play. We got a split which was good, but we had a chance to win three of four.”
The Aggies recorded an impressive 46 hits and 10 homeruns in the series. Junior rightfielder Chris Caves hit three of CU’s longballs. Senior pitcher Cody Dillon and junior pitcher James Maxwell recorded victories for Cameron.
In Sunday’s first game the Aggies started out with an early 2-0 lead, but the game was quickly tied 2-2 after the third inning. Southeastern continued to pile on runs and built a 9-3 lead after the sixth, and a 13-3 lead after the eighth. Cameron put up a two-spot in the top of the ninth, but it was not enough.
Cameron exacted revenge in the second game yesterday and put up an amazing 10 runs in the top of the first. SOSU countered and made the game interesting with 7 runs in the bottom of the first. Both teams added a pair of runs later in the game but the Aggies were in control throughout.
“We hit the ball really well this weekend, and hit a lot of homeruns,” Coach Holland said. “We hit the ball well and our pitching was alright. Overall though we were average and I thought we played okay.”
This afternoon, the teams opened up with a very competitive game. CU and SOSU bounced back and forth for most of the game. The game was tied three times and Cameron held a couple leads. Cameron and Southeastern were tied 9-9 going into the bottom of the ninth inning, where a throwing error on a stolen base attempt brought across the winning run.
In today’s nightcap Cameron started out behind in the game, but quickly tied it at 2-2 after their at-bats in the third. SOSU regained the lead in the bottom of the inning, and Cameron went ahead with a three-run fourth inning. The teams remained tied after five innings, when an RBI single in the top of the sixth game Cameron the win.
“It’s hard to go to Durant and win,” Coach Holland said. “Splitting on the road is always good; now we are hoping to take care of business this weekend when we come home.”
The Aggies return to Lawton this week to host the RiverHawks of Northeastern State University. CU and NSU kick off a four-game series this Friday at 2:00pm at Cameron’s McCord Field. The teams then match up in a double-header beginning at 1:00pm on Saturday, and then a final nine-inning game at 1:00pm on Sunday.
Admission and parking is always free at McCord Field.
