Lone Star Conference

Ags sweep 'Dogs, end regular season

WEATHERFORD, Oklahoma (April 26) – In the final regular season action of the season, the Cameron Aggie baseball team (34-20, 27-17 LSC) today completed their four-game weekend sweep of the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs (12-36, 10-33 LSC). The Aggies won yesterday’s double-header at McCord Field in Lawton, then continued their roll with a double-header sweep today in Weatherford. Cameron’s next action will be late next week in the Lone Star Conference Championship tournament.

“It’s nice to go into the postseason on a bit of a winning streak,” Head Coach Todd Holland said. “We had already clinched a spot in the playoffs after last weekend so it would have been easy to get complacent and lose this weekend’s series. It tells a lot about our team that we stayed focused and recorded the sweep.”

On Friday the Aggies celebrated their annual Senior Day with a pre-game ceremony. Ten Aggie seniors played their final home game in the Cameron black and gold and left McCord Field with a sweep in their final home action.

“I was real happy that our seniors got to go out with a sweep,” Coach Holland said. “It was an exciting day of baseball and a great way to end our home season.”

In Friday’s opener the Aggies and Bulldogs combined for an offensive onslaught. An amazing 34 runs were scored on 37 hits between the teams in a game that lasted nearly 4 hours. Cameron won it 18-16 after taking the lead for the third and final time in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Aggies used five pitchers in the game, with James Maxwell getting the victory and Jason Smith recording the save.

After the barnburner first game the nightcap proved to be much more of a pitcher’s duel, at least for the first few innings. The Aggies won the game 8-1 behind a very impressive outing by pitcher Cody Dillon. CU got on the board first thanks to a 1-0 lead after the third inning and never looked back. Dillon pitched the complete game gem going all 7.0 innings. He allowed only 1 run, which was unearned, on 2 hits and recorded 10 strikeouts.

“It showed the quality of bats we have in our lineup that we were able to come back in the first game, despite being down by nine runs,” Coach Holland said. “In the second game I thought Dillon pitched wonderfully. What a great way for him to finish his last home game.”

This afternoon the Aggies stayed hot with 7 quick runs in the first 2 innings. Cameron let their bats do the work once again as they scored 15 runs on 20 hits. CU won the game 15-5 to secure their series victory over SWOSU. The game was called in a run-rule after Cameron went up 10 runs through the first 7 innings. Brad Bichel went the distance for the complete game victory.

In today’s nightcap Cameron was actually down for most of the first few innings despite taking the lead briefly in the top of the third. Down 5-3 after the first three innings, the Aggies went onto score 6 more runs over the next three innings to put the game out of reach. CU won the game 9-5 behind yet another complete game victory, this time by Justin Kirkpatrick.

“This weekend we really hit the ball well and pitched well,” Coach Holland said. “We didn’t dominate them in every game but showed what we can do. Our pitchers looked great and we proved that we can score a lot of runs if we need to.”

As mentioned previously, after last weekend’s series with Abilene Christian the Aggies clinched a berth in the LSC Championship tournament. Seeding for the tournament will be released tomorrow following the completion of all the LSC’s baseball action. The postseason event will be held in Abilene, Texas, on the campus of Abilene Christian University and will run from May 3-6.

“Once you get to the postseason you never know what’s going to happen,” Coach Holland said. “It truly is brand new season so you have to be prepared for anything. I am excited about the way we are playing.”
