Third place CU takes three from WT
CANYON, Texas (April 6) – Continuing their blistering tear through the Lone Star Conference, the Aggie baseball team (27-14, 21-11 LSC) this weekend traveled west to take on the West Texas A&M Buffs (8-32, 5-26 LSC). With the 2008 season entering its final month, the Aggies stole three of the four games on the road this weekend to strengthen their third-place position in the conference standings. The series was pushed back a day as the teams played a double-header on both Saturday and Sunday. CU and WTAMU split Saturday’s double-header, and CU swept this afternoon’s double-header.
“We played alright and it was nice to take three of four (games),” Head Coach Todd Holland said. “It was a tough place to play and was very windy. We didn’t hit as well as I wanted us to, but we did pitch well.”
In Saturday’s opener the Aggies were led to victory by junior pitcher Brad Bichel. Bichel went the distance for the complete game victory and now sits at 6-1 on the season with a 4.12 ERA. Against WTAMU he went all 9.0 innings facing 35 batters. He threw 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. Cameron won the game 7-2, and recorded 12 hits and 4 errors.
After Cameron won the first game of the series, the Buffs came from behind to win the second game 9-8 thanks to a walk-off, two-run homerun. The Aggies had an 8-5 lead after four innings but gave up 4 runs in the final 3.0 innings to lose it. CU recorded 12 hits and once again committed 4 errors in the contest.
This afternoon Cameron came out very strong looking to avenge Saturday’s walk-off defeat. This time Cameron was the team to win it in the final inning after being down for most of the game. The Aggies won it 8-7 due to a four-run top of the ninth inning. Their four runs were scored on a sacrifice fly by senior first-baseman Michael Levi, a wild pitch, and an error. CU recorded 9 hits and only 1 error in the game.
The Aggies continued their roll into today’s nightcap, taking an early 2-0 lead after the very first inning. Cameron led for the entire game and won 13-5, awarding the team the series victory. CU recorded an impressive 14 hits but committed 2 errors in the finale.
“This was a nice series victory especially on the road,” Coach Holland said. “The Buffs came together as a team and gave us a good series.”
Cameron returns home this week to host the Texas A&M University-Kingsville Javelinas in a four-game weekend series. The match-up begins this Friday (April 11) at 2:00pm at Cameron’s McCord Field. The teams will then play a double-header on Saturday beginning at 12:00pm, and conclude with a final game at 12:00pm on Sunday.
“I think this season 23 to 24 (conference) wins gets you into the conference tournament,” Coach Holland said. “We still need to go out there and take care of business. Once you get to the postseason you never know what’s going to happen.”
