CU routs OPSU to start season 2-0
LAWTON, Oklahoma (November 19) – Tonight’s men’s basketball game between the Aggies of Cameron (2-0, 0-0 LSC North) and the Aggies of Oklahoma Panhandle State (0-2, 0-0 Heartland) wasn’t close at all as CU routed OPSU, 79-59. Cameron was in control throughout and held the lead for 39:51 of the 40 minutes in tonight’s game. CU is still undefeated on the season and has outscored their two opponents by an average of 21.5 points this year.
“We took care of the ball pretty well and we executed our offense,” Head Coach Wade Alexander said. “That helps us overcome mistakes in other areas. We are very pleased to be 2-0 after two games.”
Cameron shot an impressive 49.3% from the field tonight, including an amazing 52.9% from three-point range. CU and OPSU tied with 18 rebounds in the first half, but CU won the rebounding battle in the second half, 23-9. Cameron also limited themselves to 11 turnovers in the game.
“I thought we played a good second half and overall the game was good,” Coach Alexander said. “We need to put two halves together like our second half tonight. In the first half we were trying to score back and forth with them and we weren’t doing a good job defensively.”
The CU Aggies played solidly in the first half, but really turned it on in the second half. The Aggies recorded a 51.5% shooting percentage in the second half, and an unbelievable 87.5% from three-point range.
For the third game in a row, junior forward Kallan Glasgow recorded a points-rebounds double-double. Glasgow recorded a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with 13 points on 6-13 shooting. He also finished with 3 assists and a team-high 3 steals in his 27 minutes of play.
Glasgow is the reigning Lone Star Conference North Division Player of the Week after his impressive 25-rebound performance in CU’s home opener against Hillsdale Free Will Baptist last Saturday. Glasgow is the first player to win the award this season.
Senior guard Dave Smith led the Aggies offensively tonight with 17 points on 6-10 shooting. Smith was 5-9 from behind the three-point line and also recorded 4 assists, a block, and 2 steals. He saw action in 21 minutes in the game.
Junior forward Jamaar Burke had a big game offensively as he threw down 3 massive slam-dunks, 2 of which were alley-oops. He contributed 12 points on 5-6 shooting, as well as 8 rebounds and 2 steals in 36 minutes.
Senior forward Chad Allan and junior guard Dylan Gilliam were Cameron’s other players to record double-digit scoring numbers with 16 points and 11 points, respectively. Allan went 7-8 with 7 rebounds and a steal in 40 minutes, while Gilliam went 5-15 with 6 rebounds and a game-high 6 assists in 38 minutes of play.
The Cameron men’s basketball team stays home for Thanksgiving before traveling to Bellingham, Washington for their next match-up late next week. On November 28-29 the Aggies will make the trek up to Washington to take part in the Western Washington University Tournament.
”We have two tough games coming up,” Coach Alexander said. “It will be a good test, a good challenge to see where we are at. The team’s we will play in Washington will be comparable to the teams we will see in the Lone Star Conference, so we’ll get good experience.”
CU’s next home game is now nearly a month away. The next time Cameron fans can cheer on their teams in the Aggie Gym is on Monday, December 8. On that night the Aggie women’s basketball team hosts Newman University at 6:00pm and the Aggie men’s basketball team hosts Rhema Bible College at 8:00pm.
