Aggies win Classic, cruise to 3-0
LAWTON, Oklahoma (November 28) – With a 68-61 win over the Bacone College Warriors tonight in the Aggie Gym, the Cameron Aggie men’s basketball team (3-0) was crowned champions of their own Thanksgiving Classic tournament. An 84-58 disposal of Tabor College on Friday put CU at 2-0 on the week, the best record in the event. Tonight’s win also keeps the Aggie men undefeated on the season.
“It feels great to win both games in front of our great fans here in Aggie Gym, but it’s still early in the season and we have things to work on,” Head Coach Wade Alexander said. “We’ve done a lot of things well so far, but we need to keep pushing the entire season.”
Following this evening’s CU-BC battle, the event’s All-Tournament Team was announced. Representing CU, BC, TC, and the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma on the team were: Greg Morgan (CU), Milton Garner (CU), Ronnie Battle (BC), Fred Savoie (USAO), and Damon Dechant (TC).
Against Bacone, Coach Alexander was going against his former boss in BC head coach Alan Foster.
“Coach Foster is the first person I ever worked for, so our offensive gameplans are very similar,” Coach Alexander said. “Basically, tonight came down to which players made better plays; luckily we were on the good end.”
Garner finished the tournament with 35 points on 13-22 shooting. He and fellow guard Greg Morgan (20) scored double-digit points in both of this weekend’s games. Morgan’s free-throw shooting down the stretch was key to sealing CU’s win over Bacone.
Under the boards, four Aggies came away with at least 6 rebounds in tonight’s game. Dernodo Eiland led the way with 7, and Kallan Glasgow, Jamaar Burke, and Nathan Murray each contributed 6.
Leading the way for the team for the weekend was Glasgow with 17 total.
In the assist category, newcomer Jacquez Williams finished with CU’s top total of 12 for the tournament.
Nearly every Aggie saw playing time this weekend, giving Coach Alexander another solid look at his team that features 10 newcomers.
“It was good to stay in the win column this weekend; we had a game where we were in control the whole time and we had a game that was really close,” Coach Alexander said. “These games will be good for us later in the year since we have this experience under our belt.”
Cameron continues their current homestand next Monday (December 30), renewing the annual battle against Hillsdale Free Will Baptist.
“Hopefully we can continue to get better and feed off of the great support we get from our fans,” Coach Alexander said. “We really need to start getting focused on every game no matter who we play; we can’t underestimate anyone. We have a tough week all week next week, so we need to be ready to go.”
Both Aggie basketball teams match up with Hillsdale next week, with the women tipping off at 6:00pm and the men beginning at 8:00pm.
