CU plays hard at first-place SWOSU
WEATHERFORD, Oklahoma (February 2) – Looking to win their third conference game in a row and move closer to a postseason berth, the Cameron Aggie men’s basketball team (4-16, 2-3 LSC North) went on the road to Weatherford, Oklahoma, today to take on the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs (17-3, 5-0 LSC North). In the end SWOSU defeated CU by the score 79-63, further strengthening their first-place conference lead. The Aggies fought back in the second half, but did not have enough to knock off the streaking ‘Dogs.
“I thought we played very solidly except in the area of shooting,” Head Coach Maurice Leitzke said. “Our shooting really hurt us. Other than that we didn’t play that bad. We hung around and we played right with them for the majority of the game.”
Cameron shot 41.9% from the field in the game, but their 36.7% first half shooting percentage did them in. Additionally, the Aggies only went 6-15 from the foul line and 5-20 from three-point range. CU was able to out-rebound SWOSU 39-38, but turned the ball over 18 times. The Bulldogs shot 49.2% in the game.
The Aggies started the game with the lead, but the Bulldogs took over just two minutes into the first half. They held onto the lead for the rest of the game and at one point were up by 17 points. The score at halftime had the Bulldogs up 40-29, but the Aggies rebounded to only lose the second half 39-34.
“We just couldn’t make enough shots to put us in the situation where we needed to be,” Coach Leitzke said. “It’s great to have a home game this week because we are still in a great situation in conference play. We just have to get a few more wins and we’ll have a great shot to get the tournament.”
Junior forward Leslie Malone recorded a double-double as he recorded 16 points on 7-12 shooting and a game-high 12 rebounds. He also finished with a team-high 2 blocks and 4 steals to go along with his single assist. Malone saw action in 38 minutes today.
Junior guard Dave Smith led Cameron offensively as he finished with a game-high 17 points on 7-15 shooting. He also recorded 5 rebounds, a block, and a steal in his 36 minutes of play.
Sophomore guard Greg Morgan also had a solid game as he totaled 14 points on 6-18 shooting. He narrowly missed out on a double-double as he recorded 9 rebounds. Morgan also finished the game with 2 assists and 3 steals in 38 minutes on the floor.
“I am still pleased with how we played,” Coach Leitzke said. “Our guys are playing well.”
The Aggies host the Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions this Wednesday (February 6) in Aggie Gym for the final weeknight game of the season. The game begins at 8:00pm. There are only four home games remaining on the 2008 schedule.
