Alexander adds CU's final two pieces

LAWTON, Oklahoma (August 21) – Although the Cameron Aggie men’s basketball team announced their 2009-2010 recruiting class earlier this summer, head coach Wade Alexander and assistant coach Nate Gamet this week added two more standout players to their squad. Announced today are Kory Welch and Dernodo Eiland, bringing CU’s recruiting class to a total of 12 players.

Welch is a 6’2” guard coming to CU directly from Dunham High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He averaged an impressive 24 points per game last season, which was a team high. Additionally, Welch averaged 7 rebounds and 6 assists per game.

“Kory really knows how to play the game but he will need to add some strength,” Coach Alexander said. “He has the ability to put us in a great position in the future.”

A two-time All-District team member, Welch is no stranger to postseason accolades.

CU’s other addition this week is the 6’6” Eiland, a shooting guard who is transferring to Cameron from Texas Christian University in Forth Worth, Texas. Eiland signed with TCU earlier this summer after spending his sophomore year at Pratt Community College, but will begin at Cameron this fall.

At PCC Eiland averaged 13.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. He was also selected to the Region VI All-Region and Kansas Jayhawk Community College All-Conference Honorable Mention teams.

“Dernodo is a great scorer who can play on the perimeter and go inside,” Coach Alexander said. “He will be a very solid player in the Lone Star Conference.”

During the 2008-2009 season, Eiland led his team with an amazing 74 three pointers and 14 double-digit scoring performances, including five games of 20 or more points.

Eiland’s freshman year was spent at Kankakee Community College (Illinois) where he was named to the Region IV All-Freshman team after averaging 12.5 points per game. He led his team with 71 three pointers and a 35.3% three point shooting percentage.

Originally from Aurora, Illinois, Eiland graduated from West Aurora High School where he averaged 17.7 points, 10 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. He was a perennial All-Conference and All-Area selection who also was named to numerous All-Tournament teams.

In the offseason Eiland played with the Illinois Hawks, one of the top AAU basketball teams in Chicago.

With a dozen new signees and more than half a dozen walk-ons, the 2009-2010 Cameron men’s basketball team is already deeper, faster, stronger, and bigger then the 2008-2009 version. The Aggie men begin their season in November with their sights set on a second consecutive trip to the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament.

Cameron basketball season tickets are now on sale for only $70. Interested fans can call the CU Athletic Ticket office at (580)581-2228 for more information.
