Taylor leads CU to first LSC win

LAWTON, Oklahoma (February 11) – Behind a career-high 32 points by senior guard Kristi Taylor, the Aggies notched their first Lone Star Conference North Division victory of the season. Tonight in the Aggie Gym, the Cameron women’s basketball team (6-16, 1-8 LSC North) dropped the Southwestern Oklahoma State Lady Dawgs (7-15, 3-6 LSC North) by the score 69-61. The win snaps the Aggies’ eleven-game losing streak.

“Tonight was a big deal and it definitely feels good,” Head Coach Tom Webb said. “More than anything we’re happy for the players because they work so hard; it’s not about anything other than them. It was a great win.”

The Bulldogs began the game with the lead, but the Aggies quickly battled back and garnered their first lead of the game at the 10:49 mark of the first half. Cameron remained in control through halftime and was up 26-23 at the break. SWOSU came out in the second half on an 11-2 run and regained the lead, but it would not last.

“We came out in the second half and struggled a bit, but we continued to battle,” Coach Webb said. “This was the first time you’ve seen true belief in our players. They hit a couple of big shots.”

Cameron battled back and regained the lead with just over 5 minutes remaining in the second half. Behind consistent offense and defense the Aggies were able to finish the game on an impressive scoring run to secure the victory. There were 5 lead changes and 5 ties in the exciting game.

The aforementioned Kristi Taylor finished the game with a game-high 32 points on 11-16 shooting, including a perfect 2-2 from long-range and 8-8 from the foul line. She also recorded 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals in her team-high 37 minutes of play.

“Kristi played well and kept working hard,” Coach Webb said. “It’s easy to get discouraged, and our kids didn’t do that tonight. They should feel good about that. Kristi played really well, stayed within herself, and knocked down some big shots. This win feels good for all of us.”

Junior guard Tera Tremayne had a fabulous night under the boards as Cameron’s top rebounder. She finished with a game-high 10 rebounds as the only player on either team with a double-digit rebounding total. Tremayne also contributed 5 points on 1-11 shooting and 2 assists in her 36 minutes on the floor.

CU’s only other player to score in double-digits this evening was junior post Amber Schroer. Schroer recorded 11 points on 1-5 shooting including a key 9-10 from the free throw line. She narrowly missed out on yet another double-double as she finished with 7 rebounds. Schroer also added an assist, a steal, and the team’s only block in 25 minutes.

Also contributing to Cameron’s first division win was sophomore guard Haley Dunn who, like Schroer, nearly recorded a double-double. Dunn recorded 8 points on 3-6 shooting, including 2-5 from three-point range, and an impressive 9 rebounds in her 27 minutes.

With only 5 games remaining on the season, the Aggie women travel south to Commerce, Texas, this weekend to battle the Lions of Texas A&M-Commerce. On Saturday (February 14) the Aggies match up with the Lions in a 2:00pm Valentine’s Day game. Tonight was Cameron’s final home night game of the season.

CU only has two home games remaining on the season. On Saturday, February 21, the Aggies host the Central Oklahoma Bronchos, and on Saturday, February 28, the Aggies host the East Central Tigers.
