Aggie women beat Tigers on road
LAWTON, Oklahoma (February 13) – Tonight was the night for the Aggie women’s basketball team (4-18, 1-6 LSC-North) as they recorded their first Lone Star Conference North Division win of the season. Cameron visited the East Central Tigers (12-11, 2-6 LSC-North) on the road in Ada, Oklahoma, and came away with a 60-53 victory. A strong first half propelled Cameron to their fourth victory of the season.
“It was important to get a win tonight,” Head Coach Kevin Hackerott said. “To go into somebody’s place in this conference and win is always extremely challenging, which makes the win very gratifying. The girls played well and were very even across the board. It was a good team effort and I’m real proud of them.”
Cameron started the game strong and opened up a double-digit lead halfway through the first half. The score at halftime had Cameron up 39-18. The Tigers made a run to make it close towards the end, and actually outscored Cameron 35-21 in the second frame. CU’s defense rose to the challenge and closed out the game for the Aggie victory.
“The first half was our best half all year,” Coach Hackerott said. “We dominated on the boards and were aggressive on offense. We went into halftime with a big lead and it was a situation we haven’t been in this year. We came out in the second half and obviously had a letdown. We thought the game was over and ECU got back in it.”
The Aggies shot an impressive 43.4% from the field including 50.0% in the first half. Cameron out-rebounded their opponents 45-31 and turned the ball over 19 times. CU also finished with 9 steals in the game.
Sophomore forward Megan Atkins had an outstanding game as she recorded a double-double. Atkins recorded a team-high 13 points on 5-11 shooting and a game-high 14 rebounds. Atkins grabbed every rebound in sight and also finished with 2 steals, a block, and an assist in 33 minutes of play.
Senior forward Sarah Moore also had a great game offensively as she finished with 12 points on 5-8 shooting. She recorded a rebound, an assist, and a steal in 27 minutes on the floor.
Junior guard Kristi Taylor was the only other Aggie to record double-digit scoring numbers with 11 points on 4-6 shooting. Taylor also finished the contest with 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal in 35 minutes.
Two more of CU’s guards Tiffany Williams, a senior, and Jasmine Parr, a junior, nearly finished with double-doubles as both recorded 8 rebounds and 9 points. Parr went 2-11 from the field while Williams went 4-7. The duo also recorded 2 assists and 2 steals each.
“It was a tight game, but our kids stepped up and made plays to take it,” Coach Hackerott said. “It’s good to get to come out on top.”
The Aggie women return to Lawton this weekend to host the rival Bronchos of the University of Central Oklahoma. The teams tip off at Aggie Gym at 2:00pm this Saturday. The game is Cameron’s annual installment of the NCAA’s “Take-A-Kid to the Game” day. Fans are encouraged to bring their children to the game where all promotions will be just for children.
World-renowned ball-handler Tanya Crevier will also perform at halftime as well as at every timeout. Crevier’s ball-handling skills have been featured at NBA games and special events all over the world. There are only three home games remaining on Cameron’s home schedule.
