Aggie women fall in final road game
COMMERCE, Texas (February 27) – The Aggie women’s basketball team (4-22, 1-10 LSC-North) came up just short tonight in their final road game of the 2007-2008 season. The CU squad traveled southeast to take on the tough Lions of Texas A&M-Commerce (19-8, 8-4 LSC-North) who are currently in second place in the Lone Star Conference North Division, and may move into first place after tonight’s victory. Cameron lost to Commerce tonight by the score 67-48.
“We won the second half which was good after the way we started,” Head Coach Kevin Hackerott said. “Anytime you go 5 for 35 (shooting) in a half you will be in a big hole. It was one of those nights where we couldn’t throw it in ocean if we were standing on the beach. At least we had respectability in the second half.”
The Aggies went into halftime down 39-16, but rebounded to take the second half by the score 32-28. The Lions held the lead for nearly the entire game. Cameron’s downfall in the contest was their 23.5% shooting percentage which was countered by Commerce’s 38.1% shooting percentage. The Aggies shot just 14.3% from the field in the first half.
“Commerce is a good team,” Coach Hackerott said. “Our second half was 100% better, but still wasn’t great. It just wasn’t there in the first half. The Lions played with a lot of emotion on their senior night so give them credit. But we can’t shoot that poorly and expect to win.”
Cameron also had a difficult time containing Commerce’s Katedria Mosley, a senior forward, who had arguably one of the better games of her career. Mosley finished with 21 points on 7-22 shooting, and a game-high 20 rebounds.
“Katedria’s a senior that’s been there for four years,” Coach Hackerott said. “She is a big strong kid that played really well. She has done a good job for all four years and holds a lot of records. She played well.”
CU was able to take more shots than TAMC, 68 to 63, but was out-rebounded 62-37. The Aggies showed better ball control as they turned the ball over a mere 11 times compared to the Lions’ 18 turnovers. The fouls were about even as Cameron was whistled 18 times while Commerce committed 19 personal fouls.
Senior guard Tiffany Williams was the lone Aggie to score in double-digits as she led the team with 20 points on 7-24 shooting. She was a perfect 4-4 from the foul line and barely missed out on a double-double. Williams recorded 9 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist in her team-high 36 minutes of play.
Sophomore forward Megan Atkins had a great game under the boards, leading the Aggies with 12 rebounds. She was the only Aggie to finish with double-digit rebounding numbers. She also finished with 4 points on 2-7 shooting, 2 steals, and a block in 30 minutes on the court.
Junior guard Kristi Taylor led Cameron in the assist category, finishing with 3 assists. She also recorded 4 points on 1-11 shooting, 2 steals, and a rebound. Taylor saw action in 31 minutes tonight.
On a positive note, no Aggie finished with more than 3 turnovers. Additionally, Cameron shot 75.0% from the foul line in the game as well as a blistering 50.0% from three-point range in the second half.
The Aggies have just one more game remaining on this year’s schedule. Cameron hosts the Bulldogs of Southwestern Oklahoma State University this Saturday afternoon in Aggie Gym. The two teams are scheduled to tip off at 2:00pm following a brief ceremony honoring CU’s three senior women’s basketball players: Tiffany Williams, Merrisa Martinuzzi, and Sarah Moore.
“Obviously we want to send our seniors out the right way,” Coach Hackerott said. “We also have a chance to affect Southwestern’s postseason hopes; if we beat them we can take them out of the (LSC postseason) tournament. We have something to play for and we will play with a little pride. We are capable of doing it as long as we shoot well and play hard. The best thing we can do is to end the season with a win.”
