Lone Star Conference

Late free throws give CU 70-68 win

WEATHERFORD, Oklahoma (February 6) – With a close 70-68 victory over the Southwestern Oklahoma State Lady Bulldogs (2-19, 2-6 LSC-N), the Cameron Aggie women’s basketball team (6-15, 2-6 LSC-N) matched their win total from the 2008-2009 season. CU also split the season series with SWOSU with today’s win, as both teams won a game on the other’s home court this year.

“At the end of the day we’re happy to be home with a ‘W’,” Head Coach Tom Webb said. “Our young ladies did a great job of executing, and Lyndie (NeVille) knocked down two huge free throws for us late in the game. It was nice to finally out-rebound a team and go to the foul line more than someone.”

With 6 games left on the season, 3 of which are at home, the Cameron Aggies stayed just 3 games out of playoff contention with today’s Lone Star Conference North Division victory.

SWOSU led for the majority of the first half until the Black and Gold went on a 20-10 run to take a 42-37 halftime lead. In the second half the teams battled back and forth to the tune of 8 deadlocks, and neither team held more than a 3-point lead.

After the Lady ‘Dawgs took a 68-67 lead with 45 seconds left in the game, it was up to free throws by Luv Rattler and Lyndie NeVille to tie and win the game. Rattler’s single fouls shot tied it, and NeVille’s two free throws with 6 seconds left gave CU the big divisional win.

Rattler’s 21 points and NeVille’s 10 points both proved to be instrumental in today’s game, but neither matched the 22 points on 7-14 shooting put up by Josie Stewart.

Tera Tremayne had a huge night under the boards, leading both teams with 11 rebounds. Rattler’s 6 rebounds were the second-highest total on the team.

“Overall it was a good day. We are continuing to grow as a team and we’re getting tougher,” Coach Webb said. “If we can keep doing that then next Wednesday (versus Texas Woman’s) should be a really good game.”

CU returns home next week to host the Pioneers of Texas Woman’s University. On Wednesday (February 10) the Aggie women host TWU at 7:00pm in Aggie Gym. The Pioneers won the first matchup this season between the two teams: a 75-56 loss in Denton, Texas.

There are only three more chance for Aggie fans to catch their basketball teams at home this season.
