Aggie JV squad takes 9th
SALADO, Texas (October 2) – Sending the Junior Varsity squad, the Cameron Aggie men’s golf team traveled south this weekend to take part in the Mary Hardin-Baylor Invitational. Cameron finished the event in 9th place (out of the 14 total teams) with a team score of 624 (311-313). The University of Texas – Dallas won the event with a team score of 593 (300-293). Chris Milligan of the University of Texas – Brownsville won the individual title with a two-day score of 142 (67-75).
“We didn’t play very good, but hopefully we can learn from this experience,” Head Coach Jerry Hrnciar said. “We found out what our strengths and weaknesses are per player, so it should give the team some incentive to work hard on certain parts of their game.” The Aggies finished just one stroke behind 8th place finisher Mary Hardin-Baylor and just five strokes behind Southwestern University (Texas) who finished in 7th place.
“The course was a little different from what we’re used to because of the greens and a big flood that caused some damage; it was hard on everybody though,” Coach Hrnciar said. “We had some good streaks: some started good and ended bad while some started bad and ended good. This is something you can learn from and something that will be beneficial down the road.” Sophomore Robbe Trout had the best tournament for the Aggies finishing in a tie for 14th place. His two-round score was 152 (75-77). Trout also recorded the 4th best par-four average (4.18, +4) and the 4th most birdies (5).
“Robbe started pretty good today but he had a couple of double bogeys and a stretch of three bogeys in a row later in the day,” Coach Hrnciar said. “He hits the ball extremely well but his putter wasn’t real friendly to him. He hit the ball pretty strong and Sunday’s practice round was solid exhibition of his talent. We need that during the tournament though, but that will come.” Sophomore Chris Staats was the only other Aggie to finish in the top 25, finishing the event in a tie for 24th place. His final score was 155 (76-79).
Cade Lewis, a junior from Bixby, shot a total score of 158 (81-77) good enough for a tie at 41st place. Lewis was the lone Aggie to shoot better on the second day than on the first.
Freshmen Dave Young and Clint Wilson finished the Invitational in ties at 46th and 68th place, respectively. Young recorded a 159 (79-80) with Wilson turning in a 170 (82-88). The Cameron Varsity team will be traveling next weekend to the Southeastern Oklahoma State Texoma Cup Matches in Durant, Oklahoma. The event will be played at the Chickasaw Point Golf Course.
“We will probably practice out at The Territory (Duncan) on Friday to try to get ready to go,” Coach Hrnciar said. “I really expect good things next week from the Varsity team.”
