Aggies finish strong at Texoma

DURANT, Oklahoma (October 6) – Cameron’s men’s golf team saw its fall season come to a close today with a solid 2nd place finish at the Texoma Championship men’s golf tournament. The Aggies finished the three-round event with a total team score of 899 (303-293-303). There were 10 tough Division II golf teams that participated in the event hosted by Southeastern Oklahoma State University at the Chickasaw Pointe Golf Club.

“We made up a bunch of shots today in the final round,” Head Coach Jerry Hrnciar said. “We played pretty gritty because of an early rain delay. We got up there and it was blowing very hard, so we got off to a poor start but fought hard to get back into it.”

The Northwood University Knights ran away with the Texoma team championship with a total score of 892 (289-292-311).

Lucas Bogdan of Northwood University won the individual title with a three round score of 205 (67-69-69).  Bogdan was the only player to be under par everyday of the tournament as he finished 13 stokes below par.

Leading the way for the Aggies was newcomer Jason Timmis who finished second overall, 15 strokes behind Bogdan. With a three round score of 220 (74-71-75), Timmis was a big reason for the Aggies finishing second overall.

”Jason Timmis played well but he had a double bogey on the last hole, which hurt us,” Hrnciar said. “It’s hard to play this course without at least one double. This is the best I’ve seen Jason play since he’s been at CU.”

Four strokes behind Timmis was sophomore Garret Smith, who finished in 7th place overall. Smith shot a 224 (76-73-75) in the event.

Seniors Brett Leavell and Robbe Trout both had impressive tournaments and placed in the top 15 with Trout in 11th and Leavell placing 12th.

Rounding out the five CU scorers was senior Peter Svajlen who finished tied for 25th.  Svajlen’s three-round score was 236 (79-76-81).

“Peter is really off and was totally out of character. It’s a little of everything with him; he’s putting a lot of pressure on himself which makes it tough,” Hrnciar said. “Brett and Robbe both played well today.”

The Cameron men’s golf team now enters the winter offseason training portion of their 2009-2010 schedule. The 2010 men’s golf season will being early next spring.
