Aggie men take 3rd at SEU Invite
AUSTIN, Texas (February 19) – Today down in Texas the Cameron men’s golf team wrapped up their first tournament of the spring season in impressive fashion. The Aggies were taking part in the annual St. Edward’s University Invitational and had a 1st place lead after the first two rounds. In today’s third and final round, CU slipped a bit but was still able to muster a 3rd place overall finish. Cameron finished with a team score of 898 strokes (298-294-306).
“We played really good golf up until the last three holes today,” Head Coach Jerry Hrnciar said. “We lost by just six strokes which is tough. We actually got more accomplished than I thought we might; there were certain teams we needed to beat and we did that.”
Cameron finished the first day of the tournament tied with Central Oklahoma for the top spot. Only UCO was able to hold onto the lead however as they finished as the tournament champions with an overall team score of 892 (301-291-300).
The host Hilltoppers of St. Edward’s came in 2nd place with 896 strokes (310-285-301). Sam Powell of Northeastern State University won the individual title with a total score of 213 (71-69-73).
Senior Cane Shumaker had the best tournament for the Aggies as he finished in a tie for 7th place overall. He was in a tie for 2nd place after the first day. His total score for the three-round tournament was 222 (74-69-79). Shumaker was one of just six players in the event to record an eagle, and also finished with the second-best par-five scoring average with 4.56 strokes (-4).
Junior Peter Svajlen also had a solid event finishing in a tie for 17th place. His total score for the tournament was 226 strokes (71-80-75). Svajlen recorded the fifth-best par-four scoring average with his 4.21 strokes (+7).
Cameron’s other top twenty-five finisher was sophomore Robbe Trout. Trout finished the event in a tie for 22nd place after shooting a 228 (74-77-74).
Sophomores Brett Leavell and Michael Lee both turned in top fifty scores after finishing in a tie for 30th place and 41st place, respectively. Leavell turned in a 230 (80-72-78) while Lee recorded a 231 (76-79-76). Lee also finished with the fourth-most birdies in the entire tournament with 10 total.
Freshman David Young played as an individual medalist in the tournament and finished in 67th place overall. His three-round score was 241 (79-82-80).
“We had first place in our hands and let it get away from us,” Coach Hrnciar said. “For our first spring tournament though, I am pleased with our performance.”
The Aggie men’s golf team next takes part in the Red River Intercollegiate tournament from March 10-11 at the brand new WinStar Golf Club in Thackerville, Oklahoma. The tournament is being hosted by East Central University. The WinStar Golf Club will also play host to the Lone Star Conference Championship tournament in late April.
The Cameron men’s team will participate in only four more tournaments before postseason play begins.
