Lone Star Conference

CU participates in LSC Community Service Month

LAWTON, Oklahoma (April 29) – Student-athletes from Cameron University served the Lawton community on April 24-25 at the Kiwanis Pancake Feed, and also participated in Earth Week all last week as part of the Lone Star Conference’s Community Service Month. The conference-wide project, which spans the entire month of April, has been developed by the LSC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) as a way for student-athletes throughout the conference to unite in serving their local communities.

LSC Community Service Month encourages student-athletes at each member institution to pick projects that will most benefit their local area. The LSC SAAC representatives developed this initiative to promote team-building among student-athletes, coaches and administration while also volunteering to make a positive contribution in their communities.

“This marks the third straight year for our conference SAAC to sponsor this initiative, and we’re hopeful this will be the most productive yet,” LSC commissioner Stan Wagnon said. “LSC member institutions truly value the relationships with their local communities, and I’m so proud of our student-athletes for taking advantage of this opportunity to strengthen those relationships through service.”

While Cameron University student-athletes are busy serving in Lawton, athletes from the other 14 LSC member institutions will be performing similar services in their own communities.

On April 24th and 25th the Cameron student-athletes went to the Comanche County Coliseum and helped out with the Kiwanis Pancake Dinner. Nearly every CU athletic program participated and helped out in many ways. The Aggies assisted with the cooking of pancakes, sausage, bacon and eggs, helped cleaned the dishes, and attended to the needs of those eating the meals.

“I think it is great that SAAC has set community service month as April. Cameron encourages its athletes and athletic staff to help out in the community year round,” CU Athletic Director Jim Jackson said. “I think it’s important to set the foundation and give back to the community. When our student-athletes graduate, we want to instill in them the standards to give back because a community is only as good as its members. Overall I think SAAC is doing a wonderful job.”

Also the Cameron student-athletes participated in Earth Week across campus last week. Cameron University hosted events every day of the week with much success. The student-athletes participated in events such as the Earth Week bake sales, the Beauty and the Beast service dinner, and an Earth Week garage sale.

Each of the last three years the Cameron University Athletic Department has set a department-wide, year-long goal of 2,500 total hours of community service. With two months left to go on this year’s service campaign, the Aggies have already eclipsed their goal of 2,500 hours and are nearing 3,000 total hours.

The Lone Star Conference has 15 member institutions, with eight in Texas, six in Oklahoma, and one in New Mexico. The LSC SAAC includes at least one representative from each member institution and is a committee comprised of student athletes who provide insight on the student-athlete experience, while also offering input on the rules, regulations and polices that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses.
