King wins individual title, Aggies finish fourth at LSC championships
TROPHY CLUB, Texas (April 22) - For the second consecutive season, a Cameron University golfer has won individual medalist honors at the Lone Star Conference championships.
Sophomore Ryan King, who was named the NCAA Division II Freshman of the Year in 2002, fired a final-round 74 to edge a pair of Central Oklahoma golfers for this year's title. King entered the day one stroke off the pace set by UCO's Donnie Martin, but held steady to join teammate Kolby Seals as recent medalist winners for Coach Jerry Hrnciar's Aggies. Seals won the individual title at last year's conference meet. Martin, who shot a tournament-best round of 67 on Monday to gain a one-shot lead over the field, carded a 76 on Tuesday to finished tied with teammate Chance Cruson for second. Cruson rallied with a final-round 68.
King's effort proved to be one of the few highlights for the Aggies, however. Cameron turned in rounds of 301 and 300 in Monday's opening rounds to enter the final day 16 strokes off the pace set by Central Oklahoma. The Bronchos won their second consecutive team championship, running away from the field with a final-round team score of 286. UCO's 871 team total for the tournament was 12 strokes better than second-place Abilene Christian. East Central University finished third at 886, followed by Cameron and Northeastern State with 893 each.
Senior Ben Griffin was the only other Aggie to finish among the individual top 20. Griffin shot an even-par 72 in the final round to finish with an 8-over-par total of 224. Jorge Romano was next for the Aggies at 226, including a 74 on Tuesday. Travis Lovins posted a 72 on Tuesday for a 230 total and Kolby Seals shot a final-round 76 to finish at 234.
Next up for Cameron will be a trip to the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championships. The top eight teams in the region will compete at the event, which is scheduled for May 4-7, at Turtle Point Country Club in Florence, Ala. The winner of the regional tournament will receive an automatic berth in the 2003 NCAA Division II National Championships, set for May 18-23, at the Crosswater Golf Club in Sunriver, Ore.
