Longtime Aggie baseball coach resigns
LAWTON, Okla. (May 7) - Ron Ihler, head coach of Cameron University?s baseball program for the past 20 seasons, announced his resignation on Tuesday, effective immediately.
Ihler, 55, guided the Aggies to a 22-24 record this year. Overall, his teams compiled a 426-535-1 record since he became head coach in 1984.
?We appreciate Coach Ihler?s guidance of the university?s baseball program over these past two decades,? said CU Athletic Director Sam Carroll, ?and we wish him well in his future endeavors at Cameron.?
Although Ihler will no longer be seen in the Aggies? dugout, his presence will still be felt on campus, since he will retain his teaching assignments.
Ihler, the 1992 Lone Star Conference coach of the year, coached two All-Americans and a dozen All-Regional baseball players during his career.
Todd Holland, Ihler?s assistant this year, has been named interim coach of the Aggies for the 2004 season.
?Naming Todd as interim coach will give us the opportunity to evaluate the baseball program and the direction we wish for it to go,? Carroll said. ?It also gives us ample opportunity to find a head coach who fits in with Cameron?s overall philosophy and goals.?
Holland, a native of Crystal, Minn., is a 1999 Cameron graduate and played outfield for the Aggies under Ihler. A career .400 hitter at Cameron, Holland holds the school?s single season record for total hits (80) and doubles (25). He was elected to the Lone Star Conference?s all-conference team in 1998.
Holland played two seasons with the Aggies from 1997-98. He also served as a student assistant coach under Ihler for one season in 1999.
