Hatch named to softball all-region squad

LAWTON, Okla. (May 13) - Cameron University softball player Karren Hatch has been named to the 2003 NCAA Division II All-South Central Region first team, according to a release by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. A 5-7 senior shortstop, Hatch is the first all-region selection for the Aggies since 1998, when Lawton native Chrystal Lasell earned all-region first team honors as a freshman catcher at Cameron.
“This is a tremendous accomplishment for Karren and wonderful way for her to end her career at Cameron,” Aggie head softball coach Gladys Crawford said. “Karren was an exceptional student-athlete at Cameron, both on and off the field, and we were certainly fortunate to have her in our program for two seasons."
Hatch finished the 2003 season as Cameron's leader in total hits (56), doubles (11), triples (3), run scored (29) and stolen bases (8). She also recorded a .960 fielding percentage from her spot as the Aggies' starting shortstop, earning first team all-conference honors in the Lone Star Conference North Division. She also ranked among the conference leaders with a .373 batting average. As a junior in 2002, Hatch led the Aggies in hits, runs, doubles, triples and stolen bases while earning all-conference honorable mention. Earlier this month, she was named to the Verizon Academic All-District VI Softball First Team and is currently under consideration for Academic All-American honors, which will be announced later this month.
Hatch transferred to Cameron from Eastern Arizona Community College, where she earned second team all-conference honors and was named to the junior college all-region squad as a sophomore in 2001. At Westwood High School in her hometown of Mesa, Ariz., Hatch was a two-sport star, earning all-region honors in both softball and basketball.
Hatch helped guide Cameron to its best season in five years in 2003. The Aggies finished with a record of 22-20-2 and qualified for the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament for the first time in school history. Cameron finished the year ranked 10th in the South Central Region.
The All-South Central Region Softball Team is comprised of eligible players from the Lone Star Conference, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and Heartland Conference. As a first team all-region selection, Hatch will receive consideration for All-American honors, which will be announced later this month.
