Cameron's Griffin named to All-America Scholars list
NORMAN, Okla. (May 28) -- Cameron University senior Ben Griffin has been named to the 2003 Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars list, according to a release by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Griffin is one of 60 NCAA Division II players named to the team, which honors individuals for outstanding achievement in the classroom and on the golf course. "Ben has been a model student-athlete," said Cameron head men's golf coach Jerry Hrnciar said of Griffin's selection to the All-America Scholars squad. "He has always put academics ahead of athletics and ended up excelling in both." Griffin, a native of Victoria, British Columbia, collected several Top 20 individual finishes in his final season with the Aggies this year, including back-to-back Top 5 showings in the Bill Hill Memorial Intercollegiate in Charleston, S.C., and the West Texas A&M Subway Invitational. Griffin placed 17th at this year's Lone Star Conference Championships, helping Cameron finish the season ranked among the Top 20 teams in NCAA Division II. As a junior last season, he helped the Aggies capture the South Central Regional title and a second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championships. In 2001, Griffin earned academic all-conference honors while helping Temple Junior College to the NJCAA Division II national title. To qualify for All-America Scholar honors, student-athletes were required to play in a minimum of 70 percent of their team's competitive rounds, while maintaining a minimum grade-point average and scoring average. Additionally, to be eligible the golfer must be either a junior or senior in eligibility.
