Aggies picked third in LSC preseason poll
Kosick selected as preseason player of the year
RICHARDSON, Texas (June 18) -- Led by one of the top players in the league, Cameron University will once again be one of the top teams to contend for the Lone Star Conference North Division volleyball championship, according to voters in the league's annual preseason poll. Senior outside hitter Kelsey Kosick was named the preseason player of the year in the division as the Aggies collected one first-place vote and finished third in the poll conducted among LSC coaches, sports information directors and media representatives.
A 5-11 native of Fort St. John, British Columbia, Kosick returns to the Cameron lineup following a record-setting junior campaign. Kosick earned LSC North Player of the Year honors last season after establishing five single-season school records, including marks for kills, attempts and service aces. She led the Aggies in seven statistical categories last season and was the Lone Star Conference leader in both service aces and kills per game in 2002. A transfer from Grande Prairie Regional College in Alberta, Kosick is a two-time first team all-LSC North selection.
Coach Kim Vinson's Aggies collected a total of 62 points in the preseason poll, finishing nine points shy of second-place pick Texas A&M-Commerce. Two-time defending divisional champion Central Oklahoma is favored to win its third straight crown. The Bronchos picked up eight of the possible 14 first-place votes and finished with 75 total points in the poll. Midwestern State was a distant fourth, 22 points behind Cameron, while Texas Woman's University and Southeastern Oklahoma filled the final two slots.
West Texas A&M, winners of the last six LSC South Division titles and an NCAA national quarterfinalist a year ago, was once again the pick to win the South Division crown. The Lady Buffs collected 15 of a possible 18 first-place votes to easily outdistance Abilene Christian, which picked up two first-place votes to finish second in the preseason voting.
Cameron advanced to the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament for the sixth consecutive season in 2002. The Aggies finished the year with a 16-14 record as five CU players earned individual postseason recognition. Cameron is scheduled to open the 2003 season at home Aug. 28, against Angelo State University.
