Volleyball turns back Dallas Baptist
LAWTON, Okla. (Sept. 10) -- A solid effort produced positive results for the Cameron women's volleyball team on Wednesday. The Aggies defeated Dallas Baptist by convincing scores of 30-25, 30-23, 30-15, improving Coach Kim Vinson's squad to 5-4 on the year.
The Aggies got off on the right foot in Game 1, pounding the visiting Patriots for 20 kills and a team attack percentage of .389. Dallas Baptist registered just 14 kills in the opening frame, but committed only two errors and had an attacking mark of .400.
Cameron's offensive effort dipped to 16 kills and a .205 hitting percentage in the second set, but DBU fell off as well. The Patriots made a late run to close within a few points in the second set, but Cameron rallied to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
With the match in control, the Aggies registered just 14 kills in the final frame, but had only two hitting errors, for a team hitting percentage of .387 in the game. The Patriots, who lost a four-set match to Southern Nazarene University on Tuesday, appeared to wear down, committing six errors in the third set. Tayler Turner's back-to-back service aces all but clinched the win for the Aggies late in the third set and senior Kelsey Kosick recorded a solo block on the final play of the match to give the Aggies the 3-0 win.
Kosick led all players in the match with 15 kills and 12 digs. She also had six service aces, but gave up four of Cameron's 11 service errors in the match. Morgan Meyer added 13 kills for the Aggies. Dallas Baptist, led by Leah Holmblad's 13 kills, fell to 1-6.
Next up for the Aggies is the annual Coca-Cola Classic this weekend at Aggie Gym. Cameron will face Western New Mexico on Friday at 7 p.m., then host Tarleton State University in a Saturday afternoon matchup at 3. Both matches will be preceded by other contests in the round-robin event. Western New Mexico will square off with Central Oklahoma on Friday at 3:30 and meet Tarleton State on Saturday at noon.
