Aggie golfers to begin fall slate in West Texas Intercollegiate

LAWTON, Okla. (Sept. 13) - Coach Jerry Hrnciar's Cameron men's golf team will begin its quest for another trip to the NCAA Division II national championships on Monday. The Aggies will travel to Abilene, Texas, to compete in the annual Charles Coody/West Texas Intercollegiate. The 16-team event will take place over 36 holes at the par-71, 6,987-yard Diamond Back Golf Club.
Hrnciar plans to use an experienced lineup as his team takes on a strong field on a difficult course. Lawton junior Kolby Seals and Duncanville, Texas, junior Ryan King will be joined by Walters junior Collin Garrett. Canadian, Texas, sophomore Travis Lovins and Athens, Texas, freshman Dusty Isabell round out the lineup.
Cameron is one of three nationally ranked teams entered in the event. The Aggies are tabbed 20th in the nation in the preseason Top 25 poll released by the Golf Coaches Association of America earlier this week. Abilene Christian, ranked 13th in the preseason poll, and 16th-ranked Central Oklahoma also will vie for the West Texas Intercollegiate title, but Hrnciar believes his team is well prepared to begin the fall season.
"I really anticipate a great year with a chance to be a truly outstanding team," Hrnciar said. "Qualifying has produced some of the best scores that I can remember, particularly when you look at the scores of our players in the sixth through 10th positions. We have the depth that will keep everyone on their toes."
That preseason performance has Hrnciar and the Aggies setting some lofty goals, as well.
"I really feel that if we can win this first tournament, we'll have a chance to win every tournament we play in this fall," Hrnciar said. "Travis Lovins had a great summer, finishing second in the prestigious Top O' Texas tournament over the Labor Day weekend. Kolby Seals is playing well and Ryan King won the individual Lone Star Conference championship last April. Collin Garrett is returning to collegiate competition after suffering a severe injury two years ago and he won the big Oak Hills summer tournament in Ada this summer, beating out several Division I players in the process. Dusty Isabell, one of our freshmen recruits, beat out some of our more experience players and qualified fourth.
"It's a good group with a lot of talent that I think can do big things for us," Hrnciar added.
Action at the West Texas Intercollegiate begins with a single round on Monday. Final round action is scheduled for Tuesday. To view the complete GCAA preseason Top 25 poll, visit the GCAA website at
