Volleyball thumps Tarleton State

(Sept. 13) -- Still stinging from a four-set loss to Western New Mexico University the night before, the Cameron volleyball team bounced back with a convincing victory over Tarleton State on Saturday during action at Cameron's annual Coca-Cola Classic. Coach Kim Vinson's squad won by scores of 30-24, 30-10, 30-16, inproving to 6-5 on the season. Tarleton State, which earlier in the day dropped another three-setter to Western New Mexico, fell to 4-7. After using a late rally to take the first set, Cameron took control of the match. The Aggies limited Tarleton State a mere four kills in the second frame and held a double-digit lead virtually the entire set after jumping out to an 11-2 lead. Cameron also jumped out to a strong early lead in Game 3, cruising to the easy victory. Senior outside hitter Kelsey Kosick paced the Aggie offense with 16 kills and a .444 attack percentage. Morgan Meyer added 11 kills and junior Jenny Head led all players in the match with 13 digs. Kosick and freshman sisters Tayler and Taran Turner contributed four blocks each, including two solo stops by Kosick. Taran Turner posted the most efficient offensive statistics for the Aggies, as well, recording seven kills against just one error in 11 attempts for a .545 attack percentage. Tarleton State finished the match in the red offensively, posting a -.044 team hitting percentage. Crystal White led the TexAnns with seven kills, but the effort was offset by eight hitting errors. Cameron also exposed the TSU defense for 12 service aces in the match. Cameron will take much of next week off in preparation for the inaugural Cameron Southwest Regional Challenge on Sept. 19-20 on the CU campus. The event features six teams from the Lone Star Conference and six from the Heartland Conference in a 12-team crossover meet that will be played in two facilities at CU. The Aggies will play four matches in Aggie Gym, taking on Drury University and Incarnate Word on Friday and meeting St. Mary's University and 19th-ranked Rockhurst on Saturday.
