Volleyball falls to Texas Woman's
DENTON, Texas (Oct. 16) -- Cameron failed to capitalize on early opportunities and upstart Texas Woman's took advantage. The Pioneers took sole possession of first place in the Lone Star Conference North Division standings, defeating the Aggies in straight sets at TWU's Kitty Magee Arena. Texas Woman's won by scores of 31-29, 30-27, 30-27, ending a 10-match losing streak to the Aggies that dated back to 1997. Cameron fell to 13-10 overall and 3-1 in league play, while TWU improved to 9-15 and 4-0. Kelsey Kosick and Morgan Meyer each recorded 12 kills for the Aggies, but neither had a hitting percentage of more than .100. Kosick, who entered the match ranked sixth in the nation in kills per game, equaled her season-low in kills. Freshman Tayler Turner was one of the few bright spots for Cameron, posting seven kills with no errors in 19 attempts for a match-high .368 hitting mark. Cameron had control of the first set Thursday, leading 27-23. But the Pioneers stormed back with an 8-2 run to take the opening frame. The comeback fueled a TWU squad that needed little extra motivation while playing for first place in the divisional standings for the first time in recent memory. The Pioneers won just three conference matches in 2002. The Aggies made each game close, threatening to turn the tide, but couldn't overcome a TWU offensive effort that saw four players record double-digit kills. Courtney Lewis led the Pioneers with 15 spikes, followed by 13 from Jenny Madrid. Heather Smith and Marci Brinkman each added 11 as the Pioneers out-hit Cameron .187 to .124. TWU also posted 11 blocks on the night, including six from Brinkman. Coack Kim Vinson's Aggies will look to bounce back on Saturday. Cameron will travel to Wichita Falls, Texas, to face Midwestern State University in an LSC North contest set to begin at 2 p.m., at MSU's D.L. Ligon Colesium.
