King wins medalist honors at St. Mary's Invite

     SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Oct. 21) -- Ryan King followed his opening-round 65 with an equally impressive 68 on Tuesday, leading the Cameron men's golf team to a second-place finish at the Alamo Group Insurance Intercollegiate, hosted by St. Mary's University.
     King won medalist honors in the event with a two-round total of 133 (-11), edging Robert Myers of St. Mary's by one stroke. King and Myers were the only two players in the field to record two rounds in the 60s. Myers fired a 69 on Monday, but put the pressure on King with a 65 on Tuesday.
     St. Mary's, which entered the event ranked fifth in the latest Golfstat NCAA II head-to-head rankings, rallied from six shots back after the first round to win the team title by nine strokes over the Aggies, who held the first round lead. Cameron posted team scores of 282 and 290 on the par-72 layout at the Golf Club of Texas to tie the St. Mary's junior varsity team for second place in the nine-team event.
     Collin Garrett and Kolby Seals also finished among the individual leaders for the Aggies. Garrett carded rounds of 70 and 73 for a one-under total of 143 to finished tied for seventh. Seals followed an even-par 72 on Monday with a final-round 75 to tie K.C. Lim of St. Mary's for 10th.
     Junior Nic Ware shot 75-76 to finish in the Top 20, while Travis Lovins posted rounds of 78 and 74 to finish among a pack of golfers in 22nd place that also included Cameron's Scott Watson, who led the Aggie junior varsity team in the event.
     Other CU junior varsity scores included Brad Aycock (71 - 83 = 154), Brandon Cofer (73 - 83 = 156), J.J. Russell (80 - 77 = 157) and Dan Kucab (79 - 81 = 160).
     Tuesday's event closed out the fall portion of the 2003-04 Cameron golf schedule. Coach Jerry Hrnciar's Aggies will turn their attention to returning to NCAA Division II postseason play when they resume competition in the spring.
