Lady Aggies top Flyers in exhibition opener
LAWTON, Okla. (Nov. 5) -- Kimberle Woods posted 24 points and 12 rebounds, leading the Cameron women's basketball team to an 86-77 victory over the Oklahoma Flyers in exhibition action Wednesday night at Cameron's Aggie Gym.
Woods, a senior guard from Dallas, Texas, was one of three Lady Aggies in double figures on the night. She also led all players in the contest with five assists and five steals, helping Cameron extend a four-point halftime lead and sparking a 48-point Lady Aggie outburst in the second half.
The game was the first of two exhibition contests scheduled for the Lady Aggies this season. Cameron will travel up Interstate 44 to take on the University of Tulsa in an exhibition game set for Nov. 13, at 7 p.m.
Cameron led virtually the entire night on Wednesday, but never quite put the Flyers away until the waning seconds. True freshman Tiffany Williams, a Lawton Eisenhower product, stepped up to drain a three-pointer with just over a minute to play, taking Cameron from a narrow four-point lead to a seven-point cushion. Williams posted 18 points in her Lady Aggie debut, scoring one less than former University of Connecticut player Stacy Hansmeyer, who led the Flyers with 19 points. Duncan sophomore Christina Buben added 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including 3-of-4 from three-point range. Oklahoma State transfer Melisa Steen chipped in six points and 11 rebounds.
Cameron finished the game with a 47.6 field goal percentage including 56.3 percent (4-of-7) from three-point range. The Lady Aggies rallied from a 5-of-9 free-throw shooting effort in the first half to go 12-of-13 from the line in the second period.
The Flyers, a collection of former collegiate players with Oklahoma ties, shot 38.5 percent from the field and just 7-of-29 (.241) from behind the arc.
