Amos, Aggies outlast Sterling

LAWTON, Okla. (Nov. 29 - Cameron opened up a solid first-half lead, but needed a perfect free-throw shooting effort from senior Jeremy Amos to turn away Sterling College in men's basketball action Saturday in the Cameron PowerAde Classic.
Coach Garrette Mantle's Aggies led by 15 at the break, but needed six straight charity tosses by Amos in the final minute to notch a 73-68 victory over the Warriors. The win upped Cameron's record to 4-1, while Sterling slipped to 0-7.
Amos led the Aggies with 20 points. The Norman senior connected on a trio of three-pointers in the first half to lead an Aggie scoring run and connected on all six of his free throw attempts in the game, helping the Aggies to an impressive 23-of-26 effort at the line. Amos also led all players in the game with 10 rebounds. Chad Crawford added 15, while Mike Wallace and Trevor Lemezs produced 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Michael Moncrief paced the Warriors with 28 points, including 15 during Sterling's second-half rally. Three other Warriors scored in double-figures, led by Josh Berry's 13.
Sterling led by seven early in the game, but Cameron closed the first half with a 19-4 run to take a 40-25 lead at the break.
A pair of free throws by Wallace put Cameron up by 10 at 63-53 with just under five minutes to play. But a quick 8-0 run by the Warriors, capped by a Berry three-pointer, cut the lead to just two at the 2:30 mark. Berry added two more buckets in the closing second, but Amos held the Warriors at bey from the charity stripe.
Cameron (4-1) returns to action at home Saturday, Dec. 6, hosting Texas A&M-Commerce in a Lone Star Conference crossover contest set to tipoff at 4 p.m., at Cameron's Aggie Gym. The game will be preceded by a women's game scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
