Lady Aggies stumble at South Central Regional Challenge

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Dec. 17) -  Cameron's women's basketball team rebounded from a poor showing against St. Edward's University the day before, but still fell to fifth-ranked Washburn University in second-day action at the South Central Regional Challenge on the campus of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

Coach Dick Halterman's squad fell to St. Edward's 64-57 on Friday, but held a two-point halftime lead over Washburn before falling, 72-61.

Next action for the Lady Aggies (4-4) is set for Dec. 31, when they travel to San Antonio, Texas, for a New Year's Eve matchup with St. Mary's University.

Little went right for the Lady Aggies Friday's contest with St. Edward's. Despite out-rebounding the Hilltoppers 40-36 and owning an 18-14 scoring advantage at the free throw line, Cameron shot just 32.7 percent from the field, including a dismal 30.0 percent in the opening half. The Lady Aggies also received one technical foul (on the bench) and had one player (senior Kimberle Woods) foul out of the game.

Cameron trailed by as many as 14 in the first half, but cut the lead to just seven (58-51) on a three-pointer by Brittany Cooksey with 1:54 to play. But St. Edward's hit 5-of-7 from the charity stripe down the stretch to secure the victory and avenge a 76-70 loss to the Lady Aggies on Nov. 22.
Woods led Cameron with 19 points and eight rebounds. Cooksey added 13 and Christina Buben chipped in 11 points. Three players scored in double-figures for the Hilltoppers, led by 15 from Jennifer Knight.

As poorly as Cameron played in Friday's game, that's how good the Lady Aggies played on Saturday against fifth-ranked Washburn. The Lady Aggies led by as many as six on two occasions in the opening period before settling for a 35-33 halftime advantage.

But Washburn opened the second half with a 10-0 run that took the wind out of the Lady Aggies' sails. After Brooke Ubelaker's three-pointer put the Lady Blues on top at 36-35 with 19:20 to play, Washburn never trailed again. Woods went to the line for Cameron with an opportunity to tie the game with 9:04 to play, but missed the second of two free throws.

Woods finished with a team-high 14 points. Buben and Cooksey each added 12 points and five rebounds, while sophomore Melisa Steen produced 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
