SFA manhandles Aggies, 87-42

NACOGDOCHES, Texas (Dec. 30) -  Showing the rust of a 10-day holiday layoff, the Cameron men's basketball team suffered a sizable defeat at the hands of Division I Stephen F. Austin State University on Tuesday. The Aggies committed a season-high 30 turnovers and scored a season-low 42 points, losing 87-42 to the Lumberjacks at SFA's William R. Johnson Coliseum.

The loss dropped Cameron to 5-5 on the season, while Stephen F. Austin improved to 9-2 with its fifth straight win.

Cameron returns to action on Saturday, continuing Lone Star Conference crossover action with a road contest at Abilene Christian University. Tipoff will follow a women's contest that is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

Coach Garrette Mantle's Aggies were held without a double-digit scorer Tuesday night. Senior Chad Caudill continued his solid three-point shooting on the season, connecting on 3-of-5 attempts from behind the arc for a team-high nine points. Chad Crawford added eight points, while Marcus Girtmon and Trae Lister chipped in seven apiece. Three SFA players reached double-figures, led by reserve Dedrick Sanders' 14 points.

Girtmon and Billy Joe Kamphaus shared team-high rebounding honors, each pulling down five boards.

Girtmon tied the game for the Aggies in the early going with a three-pointer that made it 3-3 at the 15:42 mark of the first half. But Stephen F. Austin answered with a 23-5 run to quickly take command of the game. The Lumberjacks led by as many as 23 in the first half before a Lister bucket in the final seconds of the half made it 37-16 at intermission.

Cameron's 30 turnovers in the game resulted in a 34-6 scoring advantage for the Lumberjacks in the 'points off turnovers' category. SFA also benefitted from a 31-16 bench scoring advantage as 11 different SFA players scored in the game. The Lumberjacks also outscored the Aggies 42-14 in the paint.

Cameron shot a season-low 31.3 percent from the field, converting just 15 field goal attempts in the game.
