Aggies drop third straight, bow to Angelo State
GAME BOXSCORE >>
SAN ANGELO, Texas (Jan. 5) - Senior Jeremy Amos hit six three-pointers and scored a game-high 22 points, but the Cameron men's basketball team still came up short in a 70-88 loss to Angelo State on Monday.
The loss was the third straight and sixth in the last seven games for the Aggies, who fell to 5-7. Angelo State improved to 9-3 with its second victory over Cameron this season.
Coach Garrette Mantle's Aggies will look for a return to the win column with a pair of home games later this week. Cameron will host Eastern New Mexico on Thursday at 8 p.m., before taking on West Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. Both contests will be preceded by women's games.
Cameron got off to a strong start Monday against the Rams. The Aggies jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead on a three-pointer by Amos and stretched the lead to as many as nine while leading virtually the entire first half.
But Angelo State tied the score at 32-32 on a steal and dunk by Kenny Smith with 2:55 remaining in the half. That sparked a 10-2 run by the Rams, who entered the locker room at halftime with a 40-36 advantage.
Amos made it a two-point game at 43-41 less than two minutes into the second half, but ASU answered with a 19-4 spurt to make it a commanding 17-point lead with 12:33 to play.
Cameron chipped away, however, and got within striking distance at the 7:37 mark when Chad Crawford's layup cut the margin to 67-59. But that's as close as the Aggies would get. Angelo State put together another push, this time an 18-5 run over a six-minute span, to secure the win.
Amos finished the game 8-of-13 from the floor, including 6-of-8 from three-point range for the Aggies. Marcus Girtmon was the only other Cameron player in double figures, scoring 10 points. Four of Angelo State's five starters reached double-digit scoring, led by Heath Bailey's 17 points and game-high 11 rebounds.
Monday night marked Cameron's second loss to ASU this season. The Rams defeated the Aggies, 65-61, in San Angelo on Nov. 23.
