Aggies lose barn-burner to Midwestern State

GAME BOXSCORE >>

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Jan. 15) - Junior forward Marcus Girtmon paced a season-high scoring effort for Cameron, but it wasn't enough to outlast Midwestern State in a Lone Star Conference men's basketball shootout on Thursday. Girtmon scored a game-high 32 points as the Aggies dropped their sixth straight with a 109-92 loss to the Indians.

The Aggies will look to end their losing streak on Tuesday, when they open Lone Star Conference North Division play with a home contest against Southwestern Oklahoma State. Tipoff will follow a women's matchup, which is set for 6 p.m.

Cameron shot nearly 57 percent from the field against Midwestern, including 12-of-22 from three-point range, and connected on 22-of-26 free throws. But MSU racked up 38 field goals in the contest, shooting a nearly-as-impressive 52 percent overall.

The Aggies came out of the gates strong, connecting on five of their first seven shots to build an early 13-4 advantage. In fact, Cameron led virtually the entire first half until P.J. Randall's three-pointer with 2:40 left in the period put the Indians up 47-46. The shot sparked a 10-2 MSU run to close the half and left the Indians with a 54-48 halftime advantage.

Cameron kept the score managable for much of the second period. Trae Lister's free throws at the 12:46 mark made it 73-66. But Midwestern answered with a 9-0 run to up the lead to 16 and never looked back. The Indians' lead grew to as many as 22 late in the game and never dipped below 14 after the run.

Girtmon led the Aggie offense with 32 points on 9-of-16 shooting and an 11-of-13 effort at the free throw line. Trevor Lemezs came off the bench to produce the only other double-figure scorer for the Aggies, finishing with 11. MSU was led by all-conference guard Marquette Wilkins. The senior guard entered the week 13th in the Lone Star Conference with a 14.8 scoring average and finished the game with 23 points. Four other MSU players scored in double-figures, including 19 from Josh Drumgole.
