Lady Aggies get first LSC win, top Tarleton State

GAME BOXSCORE >>

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Jan. 22) - Cameron missed its first six shots from the field and spotted Tarleton State a 5-0 lead, but the Lady Aggies rallied to earn a 53-48 victory over the TexAnns Thursday night at TSU's Wisdom Gym.

Coach Dick Halterman's squad improved to 8-9 overall and 1-1 in Lone Star Conference North Division play with the win. Tarleton State fell to 7-9 and 0-1.

The Lady Aggies will look for their second conference win on Feb. 29, when both Cameron teams travel to Ada to face East Central.

Senior guard Kimberle Woods led all players in the game with 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Sophomore center Melisa Steen added 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Lady Aggies started off slow, needing almost five minutes to record their first points of the game. Steen's jumper at the 15:03 mark of the first half broke the drought and started a 10-0 run that put Cameron up 10-5 midway through the half. That was the largest lead of the period for the Lady Aggies, however, as the teams traded buckets before Cameron settled for a 25-21 halftime lead.

Cameron increased its lead to as many as 12 in the second half. Woods converted a pair of free throws with 6:41 remaining to make it 45-33 and seemingly put the Lady Aggies in firm control of the game.

But Tarleton State refused to fold late in the game. Cameron turnovers on three straight possessions with under three minutes to play helped the TexAnns cut the lead to just two with a minute to play. But TSU missed a pair of three-pointers and Cameron's Brittany Cooksey converted three of four free throw chances in the closing seconds to secure the victory.
