Lady Aggies shoot past Tarleton State

LAWTON, Okla. (Feb. 12) - Season-high shooting percentages from both three-point range and overall pushed Cameron to a key Lone Star Conference North Division women's basketball victory over Tarleton State Thursday at Aggie Gym.
Cameron hit 47.3 percent from the field, including 68.8 percent from behind the arc, to snag a 76-68 victory over the TexAnns and improve to 12-11 overall and 5-3 in LSC North play.
Coach Dick Halterman's squad will look for its third straight win next Thursday, hosting East Central University in a divisional contest scheduled to tipoff at 6 p.m., at Cameron's Aggie Gym.
Tarleton State's last lead of the game came with 8:47 left in the opening period, when JacqueRae Hill's three-pointer put the TexAnns up 19-17. Cameron quickly answered, using a conventional three-point play by Kimberle Woods to take the lead for good. TSU was within three following a bucket by Amanda Franklin with 4:40 left in the half, but Cameron scored the final 10 points of the period to take a commanding 37-24 lead at intermission.
Cameron's lead grew as big as 18 midway through the second half as the Lady Aggies continued to shoot lights-out. After hitting 8-of-15 three-point attempts in the first half, the Lady Aggies were a perfect 3-of-3 from behind the arc in the second frame. Cameron was 12-of-26 overall in the period and 12-of-17 from the free throw line after halftime.
Tarleton State staged a late comeback attempt, cutting the lead to eight on a three-pointer by LaTonia Gilbert with 3:12 to play. But sophomore Brittany Cooksey knocked down four free throws in the final minutes to hold off the TexAnns.
Cooksey led all players in the game with 25 points. The Bristow native canned 5-of-7 from three-point range and was 8-of-13 overall from the field. Kimberle Woods added her second double-double of the year, getting 17 points and 11 rebounds. Katie Crawford connected on six second-half three-point attempts for the TexAnns, including two in the final 12 seconds of the game, and finished with a team-high 21 on 7-of-8 shooting from long range.
