Aggie Tennis opens spring with win over top juco

EDMOND, Okla. (Feb. 15) - The Cameron University men's tennis team got their spring schedule off to a solid start over the weekend. Coach James Helvey's Aggies knocked off Cowley County Community College, 5-4, in matches played on Sunday at the indoor tennis facilities of Oak Tree Country Club in Edmond.

Cameron jumped out to a 2-1 lead following doubles action against Cowley County, which is ranked No. 7 in the nation in the latest junior college tennis rankings. Oscar Guerra and newcomer Ivor Hitrec posted a solid 8-4 win at the No. 1 doubles spot, while Marco Valdez and Josh Cobble used a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker to grab a 9-8 win at No. 3 dobules.

Hitrec and Alex Furlan won the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, respectively, before Valdez closed out the match with a 2-1 win at No. 5 singles.

The win pushed Cameron's team record to 4-0 on the season. The Aggies, who are currently ranked No. 32 in the nation, will be back in action on Feb. 25, hosting East Central University in a dual expected to begin at 1 p.m., at the CU Tennis Complex.

Helvey's Lady Aggie squad opens the spring portion of its schedule this weekend with a full slate of action at home. Cameron will face Northeastern State University Friday afternoon before taking on Central Oklahoma and Tarleton State in matches on Saturday.
