Softball sweeps opener with Hillsdale Baptist

LAWTON, Okla. (Feb. 18) - A pair of strong pitching performances and timely hitting fueled the Cameron softball team to a season-opening sweep of Hillsdale Baptist on Wednesday. Coach Gladys Crawford's squad posted a pair of shutouts, winning by scores of 6-0 and 4-0 to move to 2-0 on the season.
Cameron will look to continue the season-opening win streak on Thursday, hosting the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in a double-header scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., at Cameron Field.
Aggie pitching dominated Wednesday's action against Hillsdale Baptist. Kelly Holden and Lindsay Williams combined to post two complete-game shutouts while allowing a total of just five hits over 14 innings. Holden, a junior right-hander from Aurora, Colo., allowed just two hits in Game 1. She struck out four with no walks. Williams, a junior product of Lawton's MacArthur High School, scattered three hits while recording three strikeouts against just one walk in the nightcap.
The Aggie hitters did their part, as well. Cameron posted three two-run innings in the first contest to build the 6-0 lead. Walk-on newcomer Jessie Cassell of Chattanooga provided all the offense the Aggies would need in the second inning, blasting an opposite-field homer to over the right field fence to make it 2-0. The Aggies added two more on a single by freshman Megan Schneberger of Rush Springs in the fourth and got RBIs from Nicole Fleming and Kelsey Wheeler in the sixth.
Cameron held a slim 1-0 lead through four innings of the second contest before erupting for three runs in the fifth. Senior Lindsey Remington led the inning off with a home run. Two Hillsdale Baptist errors later, Michelle Wanner laced a double to center field, scoring two more. It was the second double of the game for Wanner, who also doubled to the gap in left-center in the third to give the Aggies the early lead.
Cassell finished the day 5-for-6 at the plate with two RBI and three runs scored. Wheeler and fellow freshman Ryan Schneberger collected three hits apiece on the day.
USAO moved to 5-0 on the season earlier this week with a double-header sweep over East Central University. The Drovers are led by pitcher Dana Askins, a transfer from the University of Oklahoma, who earlier this season hurled a no-hitter against NCAA Division II Adams State.
