Lady Aggies stay on track with win over ECU

GAME BOXSCORE >>

LAWTON, Okla. (Feb. 19) - The Cameron women's basketball team picked up yet another key victory on Thursday.

Coach Dick Halterman's Lady Aggies vaulted in to a tie for second place in the Lone Star Conference North Division standings with a 64-55 win over East Central at Aggie Gym. The win improved Cameron, which has won three straight and five of its last six, to 13-11 overall and 6-3 in league play.

The Lady Aggies will look to continue the streak on Saturday with a visit to LSC North rival Southeastern Oklahoma State. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m., at SOSU's Bloomer Sullivan Gymnasium.

Cameron led by as many as seven in the opening half on Thursday, but could never get into a comfort zone against the Lady Tigers. The first period featured five ties and six lead changes before the Lady Aggies took a 32-30 lead into the break.

Brittany Cooksey stetched the Lady Aggie lead to 10 midway through the second half with a three-pointer that made it 54-44. But East Central answered with a 9-1 run capped by a Taleah Hayes jumper that made it 55-53 with just over four minutes to play. East Central missed its final six shots from the field, however, and committed three tunovers in the final three minutes. Cameron, meanwhile, converted seven of 10 free throw attempts during that stretch to move into a tie with ECU for second place in the LSC North standings.

Four of Cameron's five starters scored in double figures on the night, led by Christina Buben's 15 points. Kimberle Woods added 12, while Cooksey chipped in 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Sophomore Melisa Steen had 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

Lindsay Sutton led ECU with 19 points, including a 5-of-13 effort from three-point range. Stormy Griffith added 16 in the loss, which dropped East Central to 12-10 overall and 6-3 in LSC North play.
