Baseball takes two from Baker, wins series
LAWTON, Okla. (Feb. 22) - Senior Mike Espinoza homered twice and racked up four RBI, leading the Cameron baseball team to a double-header sweep over Baker University on Sunday at McCord Field.
Espinoza posted one round-tripper in each contest and was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate on the day, helping the Aggies post wins of 4-3 and 16-2 to improve to 6-2 on the season.
Coach Todd Holland's Aggies will be back in action at home Tuesday, hosting USAO in a double-header scheduled for 1 p.m., weather permitting.
Sunday's first contest was a battle of opportunities, as both teams combined for seven runs on just eight hits. Two of Baker's three runs came by way of leadoff solo home runs in the first and seventh innings. Cameron scored in the second and fourth on a bases loaded walk to Cody Brooks and a steal of home by Rodney DeLong.
The Aggies took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Espinoza homered to left to lead off the inning before Josh Burkhart circled the bases when his fly ball to center field was misplayed. Jason Patty homered to start the seventh for Baker, but Aggie starter Derek Bennett closed the door to preserve the complete-game victory.
Cameron broke a 1-1 tie with eight runs in the third inning of Sunday's nightcap. The Aggies sent 13 batters to the plate, including two trips by Espinoza, who singled to lead off the inning, then blasted a two-run homer to left later in the frame.
Both teams scored once in the fourth. Baker manufactured a run on a double-play ball in the top half of the inning, while Cameron answered with a solo homer by Steve Clark to open the bottom of the fourth.
Already leading 10-2, Cameron put the game out of reach in the fifth. Cody Brooks led off the inning with a homer and the Aggies capitalized on three other hits, including the third double of the game by Rick Justice, along with two Baker errors in the inning to make it 16-2.
Garrett Ritter ran his mound record to 2-0 with the win. Ritter worked six full innings, scattering five hits while allowing just one earned run. Josh Smith worked a hitless seventh inning for the Aggies.
