Northeastern outshoots Aggies in season finale
LAWTON, Okla. (Feb. 28) - Defending national champion Northeastern State shot better than 50 percent from three-point range on Saturday, handing the Cameron men's basketball team an 84-62 loss at Aggie Gym.
Cameron got 21 points and six rebounds from senior Chad Crawford while ending its season with a final record of 6-21. The tandem of Darnell Hinson and Derek Cline combined for 56 points for NSU, which improved to 17-10 and 9-3 in Lone Star Conference North Division play.
Jeremy Amos and Marcus Girtmon also scored in double-figures for the Aggies. Amos, a senior guard from Norman, finished with 13, while Girtmon, a junior forward, had 11. Two other Cameron seniors, guard Chad Caudill and center Billy Joe Kamphaus, contributed in the final games in a Cameron uniform, as well.
Cameron had no answer for Northeastern's perimeter attack on Saturday. The Redmen led by 10 midway through the first half and extended the lead to as many as 16 in the period. Northeastern shot 55.6 percent from the field in the first half, including 7-of-14 from three-point range.
Northeastern's shooting onslaught continued in the second half, as well. The Redmen connected on five straight field goal attempts six minutes into the half, turning a 14-point lead into a 23-point advantage at 64-41 with 10:47 to play. After Hinson's three-pointer put the Redmen up 57-35 at the 13:03 mark, Northeastern's lead never dipped below 20 points.
Amos finished his career as the Aggies' all-time leader in three-pointers made, attempted and made per game. In 71 career games at Cameron, Amos converted 174 of 450 attempts from behind the arc for an average of 2.45 made per game. Caudill, a native of Rockwall, Texas, finishes as the Aggies' all-time leader in three-point shooting percentage. Caudill hit 66 of 150 three-point attempts for a percentage of .440 in two seasons at Cameron.
Cameron's 1-11 finish in Lone Star Conference North Division play is the worst for an Aggie team since joining the league prior to the 1989-90 season.
