Aggie men top Central Oklahoma

LAWTON, Okla. (March 6) - Cameron's men's tennis team continued its solid play on Saturday, defeating conference rival Central Oklahoma before falling to 10th-ranked Southwest Baptist at the CU tennis complex.

The effort improved Coach James Helvey's 33rd-ranked Aggies to 8-3 on the season. The Cameron men will be back in action on Wednesday, travelling to Norman to face the University of Oklahoma.

Cameron looked strong Saturday morning against Central Oklahoma, opening up a 2-1 match lead after doubles play before winning five of the six singles matches to take a 7-2 victory. Junior Oscar Guerra notched his second straight come-from-behind victory in the No. 3 singles match. Guerra dropped the first set 3-6, but rallied to win the second 6-0 and won the third-set tie-breaker 10-7. All of the other Aggie wins in singles play came in straight sets, including Gustavo Blanco's convincing 6-1, 6-0, win over UCO's Arvin Pourtorkan in the No. 4 slot.

Cameron had its chances against Southwest Baptist in the afternoon showdown, but the Bearcats, who had already notched convincing victories over Central Oklahoma and Midwestern State in the weekend quad, wound up with a 7-2 win.

Guerra and Ivor Itrec came up just short against SBU's Andras Bori and Mark Eori in the No. 1 doubles match. The NCAA Division II national champions in doubles in 2002, Bori and Eori escaped with an 8-6 victory.

Guerra again fought hard in his singles match against Eori. Guerra lost the first set, but bounced back to win the second set before losing the third-set tie-breaker 10-8.

Cameron got an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles, where Alex Furlan and Gustavo Blanco  topped SBU's Peter Joos and Brian Harrelson. Marco Valdez accounted for the second Aggie team point, winning the No. 6 singles match 6-3, 6-1, over John Paden.
