Aggies offense stalls in losses to Fort Hays St.
LAWTON, Okla. (March 25) - Despite getting numerous baserunners aboard, the Cameron softball team failed to cash in on Thursday.
The Aggies (6-21) dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Fort Hays State, losing 5-0 and 3-0, to extend their season-high losing streak to nine games. Coach Gladys Crawford's squad will look to rebound Saturday, hosting conference rival Midwestern State in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
Cameron managed five hits in Thursday's opening contest, but couldn't muster any meaningful surge. The Aggies recorded one hit in each of the first three innings, but failed to move a runner past second base each time.
Fort Hays, meanwhile, plated two runs in the second and another in the third to build a 3-0 lead while chasing Cameron starter Kelly Holden. The Tigers added two more unearned runs in the fourth, staking FHSU pitcher Melissa Beyer to a comfortable lead.
Cameron threatened to score in the sixth, using singles by Kelsey Wheeler and Ryan Schneberger and a wild pitch by Beyer to put a pair of runners in scoring position. But Beyer shut the door to keep the shutout intact.
Wheeler finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate, accounting for nearly all of the Cameron offensive effort in the game. Schneberger and Jessica Hutton recorded the other two hits for the Aggies.
Baserunners were plentiful for the Aggies in Game 2, but timely hits were hard to come by. Cameron left the bases loaded in three consecutive innings and stranded 10 baserunners in the game.
Junior pitcher Lindsay Williams, who returned from injury this week after a four-week absence, kept the Aggies in the game with solid pitching. The Lawton native took a one-hitter into the fourth inning and escaped a four-hit effort by Fort Hays in the frame with just one run allowed.
The Tigers' 1-0 lead stood until the seventh, when FHSU plated two more runs on an RBI single by Abby Maska.
Michelle Wanner and Evelyn Burton collected two hits apiece for the Aggies in the nightcap. Lindsey Remington, Amy Pallmeyer and Megan Schneberger added singles, as well.
