Midwestern State tops Lady Aggie softball
LAWTON, Okla. (March 27) - Cameron scored first and scored last but Midwestern State scored plenty in between, taking both games of a Lone Star Conference doubleheader Saturday at Cameron Field.
MSU won by scores of 6-3 and 5-1, extending Cameron's season-high losing streak to 11 games. Coach Gladys Crawford's Aggies will look to rebound on Tuesday with a visit to conference rival Southwestern Oklahoma State.
Cameron jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead on the Indians in Game 1. With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, Jessica Hutton singled to center field to score Evelyn Burton and Kelsey Wheeler. Lindsey Remington also scored on the play for the Aggies when an errant throw wound up in the Aggie dugout, awarding Remington an extra base.
But despite collecting a total of 17 hits on the day, Cameron's first-inning fireworks proved to be the offensive highlight for the Aggies. Midwestern State pitcher Brittany Willson shut the door on the Aggies after the first frame, scattering six hits the rest of the way. MSU starter Jenna Deweber handcuffed Cameron in the second contest, as well, holding the Aggies scoreless until the final inning.
While the Aggies struggled offensively, Midwestern capitalized on five CU errors while producing key hits and runs. Brandi Tynes and Rachael Jackson each homered for the Indians in Game 1 and Courtney Veal was 3-for-3 at the plate in the nightcap to lead the MSU offensive charge.
Hutton went the distance on the mound in Game 1 for Cameron, posting a season-high seven strikeouts against just one walk. Lindsay Williams turned in a complete-game effort for the Aggies in Game 2, allowing just three earned runs.
Nicole Fleming was the only Cameron player to post multi-hit games on the day. The Yukon sophomore was a combined 5-for-6 at the plate, including a 3-for-3 effort in Saturday's opener.
