Softball drops two to Southwestern
LAWTON, Okla. (April 2) - Cameron scored first in both games of a softball doubleheader with Southwestern Oklahoma State on Friday. But each time the Lady Bulldogs answered back, winning by scores of 8-2 and 6-3 to hand the Lady Aggies their 15th consecutive loss.
The losses dropped Cameron to 6-27 overall and 1-15 in Lone Star Conference North Division play. Southwestern improved to 23-11 and 7-5.
Coach Gladys Crawford's squad will look to end the losing skid on Tuesday, when they return to action to host LSC North rival Central Oklahoma at Cameron Field.
Cameron took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second in Friday's first contest. Nicole Fleming reached on an error and advanced around the basepath on consecutive singles by Jessica Hutton, Ryan Schneberger and Megan Schneberger.
But Southwestern answered back quickly, scoring three runs in the top of the third to take the lead. The Lady Bulldogs capitalized on a Cameron error and had three hits in the inning to forge a 3-1 lead. SWOSU then broke the game open with five runs in the fifth, racking up seven hits in the inning.
Hutton led the Lady Aggies at the plate, going 2-for-3 in the game. But the Choctaw sophomore took the loss on the mound, allowing 14 hits and seven earned runs while striking out two.
Cameron again jumped out on top in Game 2, plating three runs in the bottom of the first. Lindsay Williams drew a bases-loaded walk and Kelly Holden doubled in a pair of runs to make it 3-0.
But just as in the first contest, Southwestern responded with a flurry. The Lady Bulldogs scored five runs in the second and added another in the third as SWOSU pitcher Danielle West settled in to hold the Lady Aggies scoreless the rest of the way. West scattered four Cameron hits after the first inning to improve her mound record to 10-7 on the season.
Kelly Holden took the loss for the Lady Aggies in Game 2, allowing six earned runs on seven hits. She struck out two and walked three.
