Mahaffey wins medalist honors as Aggies win second straight
HINTON, Okla. (April 13) - Freshman Owen Mahaffey overcame a three-stroke deficit on the final day, sinking an eight-foot birdie putt on the final hole to claim individual medalist honors at the Sugar Creek Canyon Intercollegiate hosted by Southwestern Oklahoma State.
Mahaffey's effort helped seal a second consecutive team tournament title for the Cameron men's golf team, which held off a late charge by Southern Nazarene University to claim the team title in the event played at Sugar Creek Canyon Golf Club near Hinton.
Two other Cameron golfers finished among the Top 20 individuals in the meet. Ryan King shot a one-under 70 on Tuesday to finish tied for ninth with an five-over score of 218 in the 54-hole event. Travis Lovins finished a stroke back tied for 13th at 219 after carding a two-over 73 in the final round. Mahaffey shot a one-under 70 on Tuesday to finish at even par with a score of 213, one stroke better than runners-up Justin Bates of Ouchita Baptist and Heath Myers of Southwestern.
Brad Aycock and Collin Garrett wrapped up the scoring for the Aggies. Aycock shot a final-round 78 to finish with a score of 224, while Garrett shot 74 on Tuesday to finish at 228.
The Cameron junior varsity squad also fared well in the tournament, finishing ninth overall among the 17-team field. Led by Scott Watson's 26th place individual showing, the Aggie JV squad finished just two strokes behind the varsity squad of the University of Central Oklahoma, which entered the week ranked No. 20 in the latest GCAA Division II coaches poll.
