Wanner's homer gives Aggies split with East Central
ADA, Okla. (April 13) - Michelle Wanner's three-run homer in the top of the 12th inning lifted the Cameron softball team to a 5-2 extra-inning win over East Central in Lone Star Conference North Division play on Tuesday.
Wanner's blast broke a 2-2 tie, helping coach Gladys Crawford's squad salvage a split in the doubleheader after losing Game 1 by a score of 1-0. The Aggies (8-33) will look to conclude their season on a positive note on Saturday, hosting East Central in a pair of home contests scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
Cameron scored first the second contest, taking advantage of an ECU error to plate one run in the first. The Lady Tigers answered in the bottom of the fifth, when a Cameron miscue led to an ECU run.
The score remained 1-1 until the 11th inning. Cameron broke the tie on an RBI single by Lindsay Williams, only to see East Central answer once again in the bottom half of the frame to send the game to another bonus inning.
After Ryan Schneberger was placed on second to start the inning as part of the international tie-breaker rule used in softball, Laura Gretsinger reached base on East Central's second error of the game. Wanner then blasted the game-winning hit and Williams held the Lady Tigers in check from the mound in the home half of the inning to earn her third pitching victory of the season.
In Game 1, East Central benefitted from a pitching gem by Lacy Dyson, who recorded a complete-game no-hitter. Dyson had five strikeouts in the game and faced just two batters over the minimum as East Central handed the Aggies their 18th shutout loss of the season.
Williams turned in a strong pitching performance of her own, allowing just one run on two hits in six and two-thirds innings. But after a leadoff walk and a Cameron error put ECU's Julie Davis on third base in the bottom of the seventh with the teams locked in a scoreless tie, a wild pitch by Williams allowed the winning run to score.
