Aggies sweep SWOSU to stay alive in LSC North

WEATHERFORD, Okla. (April 14) - Cameron did it with offense in the first game, then did it with defense in the nightcap, sweeping both ends of a Lone Star Conference North Division doubleheader with Southwestern Oklahoma on Wednesday.

The Aggies won by scores of 13-11 and 4-3, improving to 23-14 overall and 9-8 in conference play to remain in the hunt for a spot in the LSC postseason tournament. Cameron will look to remain above .500 in conference action this weekend, hosting Central Oklahoma in a three-game series beginning Saturday at McCord Field. Saturday's contests have been designated as 'Pack the Stands' Day, with a goal of breaking the 1,000 attendance mark.

Cameron fell behind early in Wednesday's opening contest as the Bulldogs tagged Aggie starter Allen Mitchell for 11 runs on 13 hits in just over four innings. Cameron scored first in the top of the second on a solo homer by Derek Mihecoby, but Southwestern stormed back with seven unanswered runs to take a 7-1 advantage.

Coach Todd Holland's Aggies closed the gap with five runs in the fifth, stringing together six hits in the frame, including a two-RBI single by Chattanooga product Rusty Fortney. But Southwestern chased Mitchell from the game with four more runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it 11-6.

Cameron continued to rebound, however, pushing across five more runs in the sixth. Two-RBI shots by Mihecoby and Mike Espinoza evened the score and Aggie reliever Brad Passmore held the Bulldogs in check to keep the scored tied heading into the final inning.

The Aggies completed the comeback in the seventh as Cody Brooks notched the game-winning RBI with a leadoff homer to center field. Cameron added an insurance run on Chris Balsiger's RBI double and Derek Bennett came on to retire the only three batters he faced in the bottom of the seventh to earn the save.

Cameron scored first again in Game 2, this time building an early 4-0 lead. Steve Clark and Mihecoby both tripled in runs in the first inning and Espinoza recorded what proved to be the game-winner with a leadoff homer to left center in the second frame.

Southwestern cut the lead to 4-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the second and made it a one-run game on Randall Gall's solo homer in the fourth. But Aggie starter Jesse McDermott settled in, allowing just seven hits in just under six innings of work. Bennett came on in the sixth and struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to earn his second save of the day.

Brooks, Mihecoby and Espinoza led the Aggies' offensive attack on Wednesday, each recording four hits and one home run on the afternoon.
