Wanner, Lady Aggies close season on high note
FINAL 2004 SEASON STATISTICS >>
LAWTON, Okla. (April 16) - Michelle Wanner closed out her career with a superb effort at the plate and the Cameron softball team ended a difficult season on a positive note Friday, winning the final game of a doubleheader with East Central University.
Wanner was 6-of-7 at the plate, including four doubles, helping Cameron rebound from a 4-3 loss in Game 1 with a 6-3 victory in the nightcap. The win closed out the season for Cameron, finishing with a record of 9-34 overall and 4-20 in Lone Star Conference play.
Wanner, a senior from Weyburn, Saskatchewan, belted the first pitch she saw to straight-away center in the bottom of the first in Game 1. But neither team was able to score until East Central broke the game open in the top of the fourth. The Lady Tigers (11-19, 8-12 LSC North) capitalized on four hits and two Cameron errors to jump out to a 4-0 lead.
Cameron picked up an unearned run in the sixth on an RBI single by Megan Schneberger and got two more on RBI singles by Wanner and Kelsey Wheeler in the seventh. But ECU pitcher Lacy Dyson shut the door, earning the complete-game victory.
East Central again jumped out to a quick lead in the second contest, plating three runs in the top of the first off Cameron starter Jessica Hutton. But Wanner again led off the bottom half of the first inning with a double and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Hutton to make it 3-1.
Coach Gladys Crawford's Lady Aggies then evened the score in the second inning, getting two runs on two hits and an East Central error.
Both teams went scoreless over the next three innings, hinting the Lady Aggies might be headed for their fourth extra-inning game in a little over two weeks. But Cameron erupted for three runs in the bottom of the sixth, using a Wanner single, a walk, a hit by pitch and a wild pitch to take their first lead of the afternoon.
Hutton got ECU's Kim Ozment to ground into a double play in the top of the seventh, then fanned the next batter to get the mound win. Hutton allowed nine hits, but struck out seven with no walks to improve to 5-12 on the year.
Friday's contests ended the season for the Lady Aggies, who had been eliminated from Lone Star Conference postseason contention. In addition to Wanner, three other Cameron players closed out their career with the Lady Aggies on Friday. Amarillo, Texas, outfielder Amy Pallmeyer, Bartlesville catcher Lindsey Remington, and Bray outfielder Evelyn Burton were all honored along with Wanner in Senior Day ceremonies prior to the start of Friday's doubleheader.
