Golfers second after opening day at LSC Championships
TROPHY CLUB, Texas (April 19) - Owen Mahaffey continued his stellar play on Monday, helping the Cameron men's golf team to a second-place effort after the opening two rounds of the Lone Star Conference Championships.
Mahaffey, a freshman from Wichita Falls, fired rounds of 71 and 70 on the par-72 Trophy Club Country Club layout and sits in second place individually entering Tuesday's final round. Teammate Ryan King shot the low score of the opening round with a three-under 69 and lies just a stroke back in third place with a 142 total. Both players trail Northeastern State's Eric Moore, who posted back-to-back rounds of 70 to lead by one stroke over Mahaffey.
Players were forced to battle the elements on Monday, as strong winds and light rain hampered play. Only five players in the 40-man field shot par or better over the first two rounds, with only 11 (out of 80) sub-par rounds carded on the day.
Central Oklahoma rebounded from an opening-round 302 to claim the team lead with a sizzling nine-under par score of 279 in Round 2. UCO, which trailed by 13 strokes after Monday's first round, rallied with the strong afternoon showing to claim a two-stroke advantage over both Cameron and Northeastern State. UCO's two-round total is 581, while CU and NSU are at 583.
Other teams include Southwestern Oklahoma in fourth place with a 592 total, followed by Texas A&M-Commerce at 594, West Texas A&M at 599, East Central at 603 and Abilene Christian at 613.
The 54-hole tournament will conclude Tuesday with a third and final 18-hole round.
