Aggies claim sixth Lone Star Conference golf title

TROPHY CLUB, Texas (April 20) - Owen Mahaffey became the third straight Cameron player to win individual medalist honors at the Lone Star Conference men's golf championships on Tuesday.

Mahaffey, a freshman from Wichita Falls, turned in a final-round 71 to best the field by three strokes, leading the Aggie golf team to their sixth conference championship under head coach Jerry Hrnciar. Cameron knocked off two-time defending champion Central Oklahoma by 10 strokes, finishing with a final three-round team total of 876.

The Aggies also won LSC golf crowns in 2001, 1999, 1992, 1990 and 1989.

Things looked shaky for the Aggies on the front nine of Tuesday's final round. But a strong effort on the back nine helped Cameron produce the lowest team score of the day (293) to outdistance the eight-team field.

In addition to Mahaffey, two other Cameron players finished among the Top 10 individuals in the tournament. Defending medalist Ryan King finished fourth with a one-over-par total of 217, while Canadian, Texas, sophomore Travis Lovins tied for 10th at five-over.

Brad Aycock carded a final-round 74 to finish in a tie for 22nd with a three-round total of 226. Lawton native Kolby Seals, who won conference tournament medalist honors as a freshman in 2002, had a final-round 79 to finish at 234.

Mahaffey's four-under total was three strokes better than Heath Myers of Southwestern and Josh Luongo of West Texas A&M, who tied for second place individually with one-under totals of 215. Northeastern's Eric Moore, who entered the final round with a one-stroke lead over Mahaffey in the individual standings, fell to ninth with a final-round 79. West Texas A&M's Josh Luongo made the biggest move on the final day, posting a 68 to vault from 12th to second with the only sub-70 score in the final round.

Next up for the Aggie men is a trip to the NCAA Division II Regional Championships in Springfield, Mo. Action at Springfield's Millwood Country Club is scheduled for May 2-4.
