Aggie tennis players receive Lone Star Conference honors

Hitrec named men's Freshman of the Year

RICHARDSON, Texas (May 12) - Six members of the Cameron University men's and women's tennis teams have earned all-conference honors in the Lone Star Conference, according to a release by conference officials. Aggie men's players Ivor Hitrec, Oscar Guerra and Alex Furlan, along with women's players Carolina Vera-Vera, Madeley Ameerali and Taylor Ivie, each were recognized for their efforts during the 2003-04 season.

Hitrec, a freshman from Gardigiano, Italy, was named the LSC men's tennis Freshman of the Year while earning first team all-conference honors in both singles and doubles. Hitrec posted a 15-8 singles record this season and teamed with Guerra for an 18-7 doubles mark. Guerra, a junior from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, earned first team all-conference honors in doubles along with Hitrec and was named to the all-conference second team in singles after going 16-8 in singles play this season.

Furlan, a first team all-conference selection in both singles and doubles last season, was a second team honoree in singles this season. The junior from Motta di Livenza, Italy, posted 11 singles victories during the season, helping the Cameron men to their 10th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division II regional tournament and their second straight trip to the LSC title match under head coach James Helvey.

Vera-Vera earned first team all-conference honors for the first time in singles. The sophomore from Paramaribo, Suriname, who was named the 2003 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Rookie of the Year, reached the quarterfinals of the ITA/Omni Hotels Central Regional Championships in the fall and posted an overall singles record of 10-15 this season while playing at the No. 1 position for the Lady Aggies.

Ameerali, a senior from Paramaribo, Suriname, and Ivie, a junior from Corsicana, Texas, earned second team all-conference honors in doubles. The duo finished the season ranked 17th in the nation and had a doubles record of 16-10. Ivie also posted a 20-4 singles mark for the Lady Aggies this season, playing primarily in the No. 6 position.
