Mahaffey, King claim All-American honors

NORMAN, Okla. (May 19) - Two members of the Cameron men's golf team have been awarded All-American honors, according to a release by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Freshman Owen Mahaffey and junior Ryan King were among the 50 student-athletes named to the Division II PING All-America teams.

A Wichita Falls native and the younger brother of former Aggie All-American Shaun, Mahaffey was named to the GCAA All-Freshman team while earning third team All-America honors this season. Last month, Mahaffey became the third straight Cameron golfer to win the individual title at the Lone Star Conference championships, leading the Aggies to their sixth overall team conference title. Mahaffey also won individual medalist honors at the Southwestern Oklahoma State Invitational in April and finished tied for 11th place at the NCAA II South Central Regional Championships earlier this month in Springfield, Mo.

King, a Duncanville, Texas, product, earned honorable mention All-America honors. The 2002 NCAA II Freshman of the Year finished fourth at this year's conference championships and was in the Top 10 individually through two rounds of the regional tournament earlier this month. King is the seventh Cameron player ever to earn All-American honors in multiple years, and the first since Aggie teammates Jason Jeter and David Studebaker won back-to-back All-American honors in 1998 and 1999.

In all, 22 Cameron players have been awarded All-American honors since 1978. Head coach Jerry Hrnciar and the Aggie golf program have also produced 13 Academic All-Americans while appearing in national championship tournaments 15 times since 1977.
